We recently took a trip to Tennessee for a much-needed getaway. Like most people, we were looking forward to slowing down, getting outside, and doing what we love, hiking. But one small moment changed the entire experience. As I walked down a metal staircase in my socks, I slipped and hit my shin hard. Thankfully, my husband is a paramedic. Otherwise, that fall could have easily turned into a trip to the ER. The rest of our trip looked very different after that. And while it would be easy to say, “I shouldn’t have been wearing socks,” it made me think about something bigger… That staircase had no slip protection. It wasn’t something we noticed when we arrived. It didn’t stand out. It didn’t feel unsafe until it was. And it made me wonder: What else is being overlooked in vacation rentals that could impact a guest’s experience?
Overlooked Areas That Can Impact Guest Safety
Many vacation rentals are thoughtfully designed, with beautiful finishes, updated bathrooms, and inviting outdoor spaces. But safety?
It’s often not something guests (or even hosts) think about until something happens. Here are some of the most commonly overlooked areas where slips and falls can occur:
Showers and bathrooms
Bathrooms are one of the highest-fall risk areas in any home, and vacation rentals are no exception. Water, soap, and smooth tile surfaces create conditions that can quickly become slippery. Guests are often barefoot, relaxed, and not expecting the floor to feel unstable. Stepping out of the shower onto a damp floor can be enough to cause a loss of footing, especially for children, older guests, or anyone unfamiliar with the space. And because everything looks clean and well-designed, the risk isn’t always obvious.
Hot tub and Pool Decks & Outdoor Surfaces
Hot tubs and pools are designed for fun and relaxation, but they naturally come with wet conditions. Steam from the hot tub and water from the pool, splashing, and wet feet create slippery surfaces. Even materials that seem textured or “non-slip” can become slick under the right conditions. Guests are often moving quickly, carrying towels, or keeping up with kids, making it easier for a simple misstep to turn into a fall.
Indoor & Outdoor Stairs
Stairs, whether indoors or outdoors, are another commonly overlooked risk.
Surfaces like wood, tile, or metal can become slippery with:
- socks
- bare feet
- moisture from rain or humidity
Guests may not be familiar with the layout or material of the stairs, which increases the chance of missteps. And unlike flat surfaces, a fall on stairs can lead to more serious injuries.
Why These Details Matter More Than We Realize
Most slip-and-fall incidents aren’t caused by extreme conditions. They happen during ordinary moments like getting out of the shower, walking downstairs at night, or stepping onto a pool deck with wet feet. What makes vacation rentals unique is that guests are navigating these environments without muscle memory. They don’t know which stair treads are slick. They don’t know which bathroom floor gets slippery when wet. They don’t know that the metal staircase gets treacherous in socks. And because vacations are meant to feel relaxing, guests are often less guarded than they would be at home. That combination—unfamiliar spaces and lowered vigilance—creates risk, even in well-maintained properties. When an injury does occur, the impact goes far beyond a momentary fall. It can change the entire trajectory of a trip, introduce stress and liability, and leave both guests and hosts wishing a small precaution had been taken earlier.
Safety isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about respecting the fact that guests trust us with their wellbeing even in the moments they don’t think twice. Learn More ➡️ www.floorgrip.com
